A teenage boy was found dead just days after being wrongly accused of taking the cremated remains of a dead baby during a break-in, an inquest has heard.

Tragic Discovery

Kai Lloyd's parents found his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.

Untrue Allegations Start

The inquest learned how his mother got a message on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a woman inquiring if her son was her child. The message stated: "Tell him appreciation for breaking into my flat."

In a statement read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, asserting her infant's ashes had been taken in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.

Law Enforcement Inquiry

An official inquiry from police later concluded the supposed break-in complainant had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the items was never taken in the beginning".

News coverage about the supposed taken remains generated social media comments, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his mother said individuals "understood it was him".

The "social media content were really upsetting", she said.

Mental Health Impact

She explained that her son had been diagnosed with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' opinions really mattered to him.

"It would have affected him severely," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".

Kai was detained at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later freed under investigation.

Police said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had not reached out to the relatives by the time of his passing.

Withdrawal and Worry

His mother said her son "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could seem like days".

When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her son informed her he had entered the residence because the resident who lived there had said he could use the bathroom anytime he wanted, but denied taking anything.

Digital Harassment

In a joint statement between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being bullied digitally after the allegations.

The inquest learned that a young adult urged the teenager to kill himself.

She had no concerns on the evening before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".

She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" young man, and said her "family is completely shattered".

He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not stand to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".

Educational Response

The inquest heard from school personnel at the local secondary school.

On 8 November, she "heard some boys talking that Kai had been detained and that was the initial I heard".

"He told me... he'd was innocent," she continued.

After the discussion, the staff member said she called Kai's family landline and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to Kai about the allegations.

The proceedings heard his parents said they never got that communication.

Official Finding

Senior coroner informed the hearing he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.

Providing a narrative finding, he said: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsupported allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young child.

"Likely untruths were subsequently embellished and exaggerated through the medium of social media.

"On 11 November, he was questioned by the police and after his questioning he was released whilst investigations continued."

The official determined: "Exists no proof that the actions or failures of any agency caused or added to his passing and although it was the result of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to discern his purpose."
